Commvault Manager add NDMP NAS/Library

Configuration – NAS File System iDataAgent

Table of Contents

Add a NAS Client

The software for the NAS iDataAgent is installed automatically as part of the MediaAgent installation. However, you must add the NAS client in the CommCell Console before you can backup NAS file system data.

Before You Begin

Before adding a NAS Cluster-Mode client, consider the following:

  • For NetApp Cluster-Mode storage servers running ONTAP versions prior to 8.2, NDMP backups can only be performed on volumes that are located on the same physical node as the client. Therefore, for this configuration we recommend adding the physical nodes as NAS clients.
  • For NetApp Cluster-Mode cluster file servers or Vservers running ONTAP version 8.2 or above, we recommend turning off node-scope-mode on the cluster and adding Vservers and/or the cluster as NAS clients. Turning off node-scope-mode is necessary to enable NDMP backups to function independently of which physical node contains the backup data, and Vserver and cluster clients can backup data from any of the physical nodes and perform backups if data is moved between physical nodes. See NetApp ONTAP documentation for how to turn off node-scope-mode.

If node-scope-mode is enabled on a cluster:

    • Vservers can only backup data on volumes that are on the same node as the Vserver logical interface (LIF) used for the client host name.
    • The Vserver NDMP login and password is the same as the node NDMP login and password.

If node-scope-mode is disabled on a cluster, you must generate the cluster or Vserver NDMP password on the file server using the vserver services ndmp generate-password command. See NetApp documentation for more information about running this command.

  • To enable backups to tape drives attached to physical nodes of a NAS Cluster-Mode client, the physical node to which the tape drives are attached must be a NAS client. To add a physical node as a NAS client when node-scope-mode is off, the NDMP credentials are the same as the cluster client.
  • A cluster client has access to all of the tape drives on all of the physical nodes and can best ensure local two-way NDMP backups are run using the NDMP Cluster-Aware-Backup (CAB) extension. Vserver clients will also run local NDMP backups using the CAB extension, but only if the backup paths are on the same physical node with the tape drive. If the tape drive is not on the same node as the backup data, data will be passed between the nodes within the cluster (three-way NDMP backup).
  • For backups to libraries on a MediaAgent, cluster and Vserver clients will both use the CAB extension to prevent data from being passed within the cluster before being sent to the MediaAgent.

Procedure

Follow the steps below to create and configure the NAS client. If the data you want to backup resides on a Storage Virtual Machine (vFiler or Vserver), configure the Storage Virtual Machine as the NAS client.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click Client Computers, point to New Client | File System, and then select NAS.

  2. Enter the NAS file server in the NDMP Server Hostname field.
  3. Enter the user account credentials used to access the storage device in the NDMP Login field.
  4. In the NDMP Password field, enter the password for the login account, and then click Detect.

The system automatically populates the VendorFirmware Revision, and Listen Port information.

  5. Click OK.

Depending on the File Server you are using, your screen may look different from the example shown.

Any NAS storage device that will be used for backing up secondary storage data (Vault, Mirror, or backup copy) must be configured as a NAS Client in the CommCell with the same name that is used by the OCUM server to communicate to the secondary NAS file server.

In the CommCell Browser, confirm that the NAS client was added under Client Computers.

Configuring Storage Virtual Machines

You can add Storage Virtual Machines as NAS clients using the Storage Virtual Machine tab in the cluster client properties dialog box. For more information, see Configuring Storage Virtual Machines on NetApp Arrays.

Configure Libraries and Drives Attached to a NAS Storage Server Using Automatic Detection

About this Procedure

These steps are required only if the storage server has tape drives attached to it. Backups can be written to libraries on the MediaAgent or to libraries on other storage servers.

The settings of the storage server determine how the storage server connects to the MediaAgent. If you want to define the interface used to connect the MediaAgent to the storage server, you can use the Data-Interface-Pairs (DIP) feature from the CommCell Console. See Data-Interface-Pairs.

Tape libraries attached to a NAS file server must be configured to use port 10000. Other ports are not supported.

Before You Begin

For NetApp Cluster-Mode storage servers, consider the following:

  • Tape drives should be detected and configured on the physical nodes on the cluster.
  • Vserver client backups will be local two-way within the cluster when backing up volumes that reside on the same physical node as the tape drive. A subclient can be assigned to a storage policy whose primary copy contains a data path to the tape drive(s) on a physical node. If the physical node for the data path to the tape drive matches the physical node of the backup path, the data will be backed up with local two-way from the physical node to the tape drive, without passing between nodes within the cluster.
  • Cluster client backups will be local two-way within the cluster when backing up volumes that reside on any physical node that can access the tape drive. Even if the drive pools on a physical node are configured using the Library and Drive Configuration Tool, a cluster client will still access the tape drive through the physical node that contains the backup data.

Procedure

  1. On the Storage tab, click Library and Drive.

  2. Under Available MediaAgents, select the MediaAgent, and then click Add.
  3. Click OK.

  4. Click Start.
  5. Select Detect/Configure Devices…

  6. Click NDMP Devices. The MediaAgent that controls the library is displayed.

    Click OK.

  7. Under Available NDMP Servers, select the name of the file server added in step 2 and click Add.

    Click OK.

  8. Click Yes. The system will detect the devices and mount the media in the drives to verify the correct drive-to-library mapping.

  9. Click Close.

  10. Click OK.

  11. Right-click the library and select Configure.

  12. Click Library and all drives to configure all the drives within the library.

    Click OK.

  13. Click Yes.

  14. Select Default Media Type from the list and click Yes.

  15. The status of the library changes to Configured.

If you chose to configure all associated drives, the status of the drives also changes to Configured.

The Libraries tab provides the physical view of the devices (library and drives).

The Data Paths tab provides a logical view of the data path used to access the devices – library, master drive pool, drive pool, drive.

Create a Storage Policy and Assign to Subclient

You can either use an existing storage policy or create a new one. If you create a new storage policy, you can select the library where you want the data to be written, including libraries on the MediaAgent or other file servers.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Policies.

Right-click Storage Policies and select New Storage Policy.

Follow the prompts displayed in the Storage Policy Wizard. The required options are mentioned below:

    • Select the Storage Policy type as Data Protection and Archiving and click Next.
    • Enter the name in the Storage Policy Name box and click Next.
    • From the Library list, select the name of the library and click Next.
    • From the Drive Pool, select the drive pool that for the MediaAgent and click Next.
    • Click Next.
    • Review the details and click Finish to create the Storage Policy.

  2. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers | <Client> | NAS | defaultBackupSet.

Right-click the default subclient and then click Properties.

  3. Click the Storage Device tab.

In the Storage Policy box, select the Storage Policy created in previously.

    Click OK.

Proxmox for ARM64
