11  Configuring NDMP

This chapter describes how to configure NDMP-based backup recovery on the VTL6000.

11.1  Configuration Process

This section describes the configuration process of backup and recovery based on the NDMP function of NetBackup and that of the VTL6000.

Figure 11-1 shows the configuration process.

Enabling NDMP of the VTL6000

This section describes how to enable the NDMP function of the VTL6000.

Context

When the 3-WAY backup mode is used, you need to enable the NDMP function of the VTL6000. Figure 11-2 shows the networking.

In this figure, NetBackup for NDMP Server is an NBU Master/Media server installed with NetBackup for NDMP, NDMP host is a host that runs the applications of the NDMP server. The host is usually a NAS that provides file services through a protocol (HTTP, FTP, CIFS, or NFS).

The NDMP host serves as a NetBackup client, but it does not need to be installed with the NetBackup client software. The NetBackup for NDMP Server is an NDMP client, and it sends commands to the applications of the NDMP server (through the NDMP protocol) and controls the backup/recovery operations on the NDMP host.

In the VTL6000, when the NDMP function is enabled, the Hosted Backup function is enabled automatically at the same time. After being assigned with virtual tape libraries, the VTL acts as an NDMP host mounted with tape libraries. Under the control of the NetBackup for NDMP Server, backup data is moved from another NDMP host directly to the virtual tape library.

Procedure

  1. Use the Putty software log in to the VTL6000 Engine on the CLI, as shown in Figure 11-3.

    1. Enter the IP address in the Host Name text box, enter 22 in the Port text box, and select SSH as the protocol. Then click Open.
    2. Define the host name of the VTL Engine in the IP address Host Name format in the /etc/hosts file, for example 129.28.129.199 vtl199.
  2. In the navigation tree on the VTL6000 Console, right-click VTL Engine. Choose Options > Enable NDMP from the shortcut menu, and the dialog box shown in Figure 11-4 is displayed. Enter the user name and password.

     NOTE:

    The user name and password are used by the NDMP for interaction with the backup server. The NDMP module of the backup software accesses the VTL server through the user name and password.

    The NDMP user name and password do not need to be the system user name and password, and can be user-defined. After defining the user name and password, memorize them, as you will use them to authenticated the NetBakcup backup software for accessing the VTL server through the NDMP.

  3. Click OK.
  4. In the navigation tree of the VTL6000 Console, select SAN Clients, and right-click HostedBackupClient. Choose Assign from the shortcut menu. Selecting the library to be assigned, as shown in Figure 11-5.

     NOTE:

    HostedBackupClient can have multiple virtual libraries assigned to it. Conversely, libraries assigned to the HostedBackupClient can also be assigned to other clients.

  5. Click Next to confirm the configuration, as shown in Figure 11-6.

  6. Click Finish.

Configuring NDMP Services on the NDMP Host

This section describes how to configure NDMP services on the NDMP host.

Prerequisite

The NDMP host runs normally.

Context

The NDMP services must be configured on the CLI. For how to log in to the CLI, see the documents delivered with the NetApp host. This section only describes how to configure the NDMP services after the login.

 NOTE:

The NDMP services are not provided by NetApp only, and the methods for enabling the NDMP services provided by other manufacturers are different; therefore, this section uses how to configure the NetApp NDMP services as an example.

Procedure

  1. Log in to the NetApp host as a root user on the CLI. Enable the NDMP services.

    The CLI format is ndmpd on.

  2. Assign the NDMP version supported by the NetApp host. This section uses NDMP v4 as an example.

    The CLI format is ndmpd　version4.

     NOTE:

    For the related operations on preparing backup data on the NetApp host (enable/disable cifs services, and upload related data), see the documents delivered with the NetApp host.

Installing the NetBackup for NDMP component

This section describes how to install the NetBackup for NDMP component.

Prerequisite

The NetBackup software is installed and runs normally.

The NetBackup Server has a valid NDMP license.

Context

This section takes the NetBackup in Windows as an example.

The NetBackup for NDMP needs to be installed on the Master/Media Server with NBU 6.5 or later versions.

In Windows, the NetBackup for NDMP is a pre-configured core component for the NetBackup.

In UNIX, the NetBackup for NDMP needs to be installed. For details, see related documents on the NetBackup.

Configuring NDMP Host in NetBackup

This section describes how to configure the NDMP host in NetBackup.

Prerequisite

The NMDP component of the NetBackup is installed and runs normally.

The NDMP services of the NDMP host is enabled and runs normally.

Procedure

  1. Name the VTL server and NetApp host.

    In the %WINDOWS_install%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file of the NetBackup Master Server, name the VTL server and the NetApp host in format of IP address host name.

  2. On the CLI, go to the %NBU_Veritas%\Volmgr\bin directory of the NetBackup Master Server. Authenticate the NetBackup Master Server to access the VTL server through the NDMP by running the following command (vtl1999 is the host name of the VTL server): set_ndmp_attr –auth vtl199

    Type the user name and password that are used to enable to the NDMP on the VTL server. Run the following command to check whether the authentication succeeds:

    Tpautoconf –verify vtl199

    Figure 11-7 shows that the authentication succeeds.

  3. Repeat the previous step to authenticate the NetBackup Master Server to access the NetApp host through the NDMP. The authenticated user name and password of the NetApp host are root, as shown in Figure 11-8.

  4. On the NetBackup Master Server Console, choose Media and Device Management > Credentials > NDMP Hosts, and click the  button, as shown in Figure 11-9.

    The previously authenticated two NDMP hosts are displayed, including the VTL server and NetApp host with enabled NDMP.

Configuring NDMP Storage in NetBackup

This section describes how to configure the NDMP storage in NetBackup.

Prerequisite

The NDMP host is configured in NetBackup.

The VTL server is configured in NetBackup.

Procedure

  1. In the navigation tree of the NetBackup Console, click the Media and Device Management node. Click Configure Storage Devices in the operation area to open the Device Hosts page of Device Configuration Wizard, as shown in Figure 11-10.

    Click Change, and the dialog box shown in Figure 11-11 is displayed. Select NDMP Host and click OK.

  2. Click Next to select a host. The previously two authenticated NDMP hosts that can be accessed by NetBackup are listed in the Wizard, uncheck the NetApp host, as shown in Figure 11-12.

  3. Click Next to confirm the configurations of the tape library and tape drive. NetBackup can discover devices on the NDMP host through the NDMP protocol, as shown in Figure 11-13.

  4. Click Next to configure the storage device according to its default configuration.
  5. In the NetBackup navigation tree, choose Devices > Robots. Right-click the robot in the operation area, as shown in Figure 11-14. Choose Inventory Robot from the displayed shortcut menu, as shown in Figure 11-15.

  6. Click Start and Yes to start viewing the tape list.
  7. Choose NetBackup Management > Storage, and right-click Storage Units. From the displayed shortcut menu, choose New Storage Unit to create a storage unit.

    Enter the name of the storage unit. Select NDMP in Storage unit type, VTL server in NDMP Host, and the NBU media server of the current storage device in Media Server, as shown in Figure 11-16.

  8. Click OK.

Creating a NDMP Backup Policy

This section describes how to create a NDMP backup policy.

Prerequisite

The NDMP storage unit is configured in NetBackup.

Procedure

  1. In the navigation tree of the NetBackup Console, choose NetBackup Management > Policies. From the displayed shortcut menu, choose New Policy…, as shown in Figure 11-17.

    In the displayed Add a New Policy dialog box, enter the policy name, as shown in Figure 11-18.

  2. Click OK to confirm the policy name, and the dialog box about the policy information is displayed. On the Attributes tab, select NDMP in Policy type and the newly created NDMP storage unit in Policy storage unit, as shown in Figure 11-19.

  3. Click the Schedules tab and click the New… button to create a new schedule.

    The schedule is the same as the schedule of file backup. For details, see the related documents on NetBackup.

  4. Click the Clients tab and click the New… button to create a new client.
    1. Enter the host name of the NetApp host and click the Properties button. Select NDMP, NDMP in the Client Hardware and Operating System dialog box, as shown in Figure 11-20.

    2. Click OK.
  5. Click the Backup Selections tab and click the New… button to create a new Backup Selections.
    1. In the Backup Selections list, enter the absolute path of the directory to be backed up on the NetApp host, as shown in Figure 11-21.

    2. Click OK. CAUTION:

      For a NDMP backup policy, the directory path on the Backup Selections tab is an absolute path. The path can be a volume name or a directory name, but cannot be a file name or contain wildcard characters such as *. Run the cifs shares command on the NDMP host to view the shared directories and volumes.

Running the NDMP Backup

This section describes how to run the NDMP backup.

Prerequisite

The NDMP backup policy is created.

Procedure

  1. On the NetBackup Console, right-click a configured policy. From the displayed shortcut menu, choose Manual Backup to implement the manual backup, as shown in Figure 11-22.

  2. When the backup operation completes, the interface as shown in Figure 11-23 is displayed.

Implementing the NDMP Restoration

This section describes how to implement the NDMP restoration.

Prerequisite

The NDMP backup policy is created.

Context

After the NDMP backup policy is created, the backup policy is automatically enabled according to the schedule setting. You can also manually run the backup policy to test its accuracy.

The process of the NDMP backup is: under the NetBackup control (transforming information to the NetApp host and the VTL server through the NDMP), data in the NetApp host directory can be directly backed up to the VTL server over the LAN.

Procedure

  1. On the NetBackup Master Servce Console, click the File drop-down list, and select Backup, Archive, and Restore to display the NetBackup operation restoration interface, as shown in Figure 11-24.

  2. On the NetBackup operation restoration interface, click the File drop-down list, and select Specify NetBackup Machines and Policy Type, the dialog box shown in Figure 11-25 is displayed.

    Select the name of the NetApp host in Source client for restores and Destination client for restores (click Edit Client List to add the NetApp host), select NDMP in Policy type for restores, and click OK.

  3. Click OK to complete the initial configuration on the NetBackup Client.

    On the NetBackup operation restoration interface, select the Select for Restore menu, click the directory to be restored and click , as shown in Figure 11-26.

  4. You do not to change the default configurations on the displayed interface. Click Start Restore to start the restoration operation, as shown in Figure 11-27.

    Under the NetBackup control, data on the virtual tape can be directly restored onto the NetApp host over the LAN.
