Oracle Database 12c installation on Oracle Linux 7 (OEL7.2)

Oracle Database 12c Release 1 (12.1) Installation on Oracle Linux 7 (OL7.2)

Note from Oracle Database 12c R1 Installation Guide:

  • Starting with Oracle Database 12c Release 1 (12.1.0.2), Oracle Linux 7 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 are supported on Linux x86-64 systems.

Supported Oracle Linux 7 distributions:

  • Oracle Linux 7 with the Unbreakable Enterprise kernel: 3.8.13-33.el7uek.x86_64 or later
  • Oracle Linux 7 with the Red Hat Compatible kernel: 3.10.0-123.el7.x86_64 or later

This means that Oracle Linux 7 only supports 12.1.0.2 onwards. This installation guide should not be used for a real system when using 12c database versions prior to 12.1.0.2.

In our previous document (Oracle Linux 7.2 Installation using VirtualBox) we covered operating system installation; it’s a prerequisite for this tutorial.

At this moment we have “fresh” installation of the Oracle Linux 7.2. System is up and running.

  1. Download Software

Download the Oracle software from OTN (Oracle Technology Network) or from edelivery

  1. Check the hosts file, selinux config, and the firewall

Hosts File

The “/etc/hosts” file must contain a fully qualified name for the server.

<IP-address>       <fully-qualified-machine-name>                 <machine-name>

SELinux

SELinux is an access control implementation for the Linux kernel.

 

 

Firewall

If the OS is to be used for an Oracle installation, it is easier if the firewall is disabled.

 

 

  1. Oracle Installation Prerequisites

You will need the oracle-rdbms-server-12cR1-preinstall-1.0-4.el7.x86_64 rpm to complete the basic prerequisites. You can find it on your OS installation “Package” folder or just use yum to install it (yum install oracle-rdbms-server-12cR1-preinstall -y).

 

 

You can install missing packages from dvd. Just mount it and install missing packages using rpm -Uvh command from directory <mount dvd>/Packages or by using yum install command. I’m using x86_64 version of packages

 

 

Manual Setup

If you don’t have the “oracle-rdbms-server-12cR1-preinstall” package to perform all prerequisites, you will need to manually perform the following setup tasks.

Add or amend the following lines in the “/etc/sysctl.conf” file.

# kernel parameters for 12gR1 installation

kernel.shmall = 1073741824
kernel.shmmax = 4398046511104
net.core.rmem_default = 262144

fs.aio-max-nr = 1048576
net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range = 9000 65500

 

 

Run the following command to change the current kernel parameters.

/sbin/sysctl -p

Add the following lines to set shell limits for user oracle in  “/etc/security/limits.conf” file.

# shell limits for oracle user 12gR1
oracle   soft   nofile   1024
oracle   hard   nofile   65536
oracle   soft   nproc    2047
oracle   hard   nproc    16384
oracle   soft   stack    10240
oracle   hard   stack    32768

 

 

Add following line in the /etc/pam.d/login file, if it does not already exist

session required pam_limits.so

 

 

OPTIONAL: Take a Snapshot of your Virtual Machine

This will be our checkpoint on our installation guides. You can restore your VM at this snapshot at any time.

Click “Machine” menu and select “Take Snapshot…”

 

 

Choose your Snapshot Name and Description

 

 

Wait for its progress

You now have a new Snapshot for your VM

 

 

  1. Create the directories in which the Oracle software will be installed.
mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle/product/12.1.0/db_1
chown -R oracle:oinstall /u01
chmod -R 775 /u01

 

 

  1. Add the following lines at the end of the “/home/oracle/.bash_profile” file.

export ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/product/12.1.0/db_1
export ORACLE_SID=cdb1
export ORACLE_UNQNAME=cdb1

export PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/bin:$PATH
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:/lib:/usr/lib
export CLASSPATH=$ORACLE_HOME/jlib:$ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/jlib
export TMP=/tmp
export TMPDIR=$TMP

 

 

  1. Check your oracle user details

Modify oracle user to be part of the vboxsf group so it can access our Shared folder

 

 

  1. Connect as oracle account

 

 

  1. Unzip the files.

unzip linuxamd64_12102_database_1of2.zip

unzip linuxamd64_12102_database_2of2.zip

 

 

  1. Go to the Database folder and check its content

 

 

  1. Run the installer (./runInstaller)

 

 

  1. Uncheck checkbox “I wish to receive security updates via My Oracle Support” and then click “Next” button.

 

 

  1. Ignore following message and click “Yes” button.

 

 

  1. Skip software updates

 

 

  1. Select “Create and configure a database” then click “Next” button.

 

 

  1. Select “Server class” and click “Next” button.

 

 

  1. Accept default “Single instance database installation” and click “Next” button.

 

 

  1. We will look at the Typical and Advanced install option

NOTE: Let’s take a look at Typical install first

 

 

  1. Fill the needed information on the Typical Install Configuration window

 

 

  1. Choose your oraInventory location or click Next and set it to default

 

 

  1. You are now presented the Summary of the Installation for the Typical install, you can start by clicking Install.

 

 

NOTE: We’ll go back to #17 this time and choose the Advanced install option.

  1. Select “Advanced install” to later select more options during database installation and click “Next” button.

 

 

  1. You can select the edition you want. Once it’s done click “Next” button.

 

 

  1. You can select language here. Once it’s done click “Next” button.

 

 

  1. Here you should see directories for ORACLE_BASE and ORACLE_HOME for your binaries according to environmental settings. Click “Next” button.

 

 

  1. Accept default and click “Next” button.

 

 

  1. Accept default “General Purpose/ Transaction Processing” and click “Next” button.

 

  1. Here you define your database name. Check checkbox “Create as Container database” and enter “Pluggable database name” to add your first container CDB1 and pluggable PDB1 database and click “Next” button.

 

 

  1. Specify more details about your database on 3 tabs where you can define memory settings, character set and if to install sample schema on your database. Once you are happy with your settings click “Next” button.

  1. Specify directory where you want to install your database files then click “Next” button.

 

 

  1. On this page you can register your database in Oracle Enterprise Manager”. Accept default settings and click “Next” button.

 

 

  1. Check checkbox “Enable Recovery” to specify directory for your recovery area “Recovery area location” and click “Next” button.

 

 

  1. Specify password for each user or enter the same for all. Once it’s done click “Next” button.

 

 

  1. Here you can specify OS group for each oracle group. Accept default settings and click “Next” button.

 

 

  1. If everything is right click “Install” button. It’s the last moment to come back to each of previous point and make changes.

 

  1. Once binaries are installed the last step is to run 2 scripts as user root.

 

 

 

 

  1. Installation in progress

 

 

  1. Database Configuration Assistant will start automatically and create database for you.

 

 

  1. You should see summary window. You can update “Password Management” here. Once it’s done click “OK” button to continue. Oracle 12C installation is completed. Click “Close” button.

 

  1. Try to login as SYS to Enterprise manager Database express 12C
